Indigo Books and Music
Design ⋅ Art
Indigo is Canada's largest book, gift and specialty toy retailer, operating 200+ stores in all ten provinces and one territory, and through a website offering a selection of books, toys, home décor, stationery and gifts.
With a new vision for the look and layout of their stores, I was brought onto the Indigo team developed a series of large scale art pieces to elevate the different departments of their flagship stores around Canada and first store In the United states. The goal of these pieces was to add a sense of playfulness to the stores that could be enjoyed by both children and adults.
ART & PHOTOGRAPHY SPINNER
One of the main focuses of the art pieces in the stores, was to create some interactivity with the customer. Made up of 4 artists done in 3 separate art styles (Photography, Illustration, Screen-printing), this large spinner pulls in the customer and allows them to play with each individual panel and create a unique piece of collaged artwork from the different styles.
STORIES CONNECT US
This lenticular was created to mimic the feel and joy of a flip book coming to life. Composed of 3 separate images of famous Canadian writers and and influential people, the images change as the customer moves around it, making them the moving piece in this artwork.
CREATE A STORY MOBILE
In the 3 story flagship Toronto store, there is a large open atrium spanning the 3 floors. Inspired by the works of Alexander Calder, a 3 piece, 35 foot mobile was created that hung from the ceiling and dangled down through the centre of the floors. The mobile is made up of parts of letters that encourage the customer to create words as they travel around the slowly moving pieces.
In the stores larges section, fiction and non-fiction books, we wanted to highlight some of the amazing writers within the isles. A series of famous authors portraits were set underneath an offset coloured plexiglass that highlighted them with their quotes.
ENRICH YOUR LIFE
For a campaign to be rolled out in store windows across the country, a series of images and illustrations were made in a way so that they could get collaged together to fit the various window sizes. The work was also used to cover the wall of an escalator along with famous quotes to be viewed as the customer travels between floors.
To add a bit of fun to a wall of book shelves, a large 3-D book letter bookshelf was created and was filled with the same colour book that changes depending on the season.
