ROLE:
Senior designer, Store Graphics.
Graphic design, Installation, Ideation, Illustration,
Location:
Stores across Canada, New jersey, and online.
Description
Indigo is Canada's largest book, gift, and specialty toy retailer, operating stores in all ten provinces and one territory, and through a website offering a selection of books, toys, home décor, stationery, and gifts. I was brought in as the senior designer for store graphics in 2018 as they were doing a complete redesign of the major stores. In this role I was asked to create large and interactive pieces for the major flagship stores, as well as elements that were featured in the rest of the stores.
In this new redesign of the stores, sections were created similar to a department store, each for a specific world of items, and always tying back to books. Large art pieces were designed to go within these sections and reflect the the items that were being sold in them.
Lenticular
Located in a section of the store that sold mostly magazines and books, this 3 sided lenticular piece features 3 Canadian writers. Just like the flipping pages of a book, the images flip as you walk past them giving you a different image depending on where you stand.
Art & Photography Spinner
Located in the Art & Photography section of the store, this giant 3 sided spinning collage allows customers to get creative and make their own version of the images. Side one black and white photography. Side two, Warhol inspired screen print. Side three, a sketched line illustration.
The Paper Shop
This section of the store focuses on notebooks, writing utensils, school and work supplies. Using paper art as in inspiration, I wanted to create something that would mimic a delicate 3 dimensional paper art piece. The Paper Shop signs were unique in the different store locations and were created using thin yet durable materials, and had hidden spots of colour throughout.
Around The Store
Various elements added throughout the store with a focus on book, writers, musicians, quotes and texts.
Mobile detail.
"READ" book shelf.
"Enrich Your Life" murals designed with modular elements that allow it to change easily depending on the location.
30 foot long, 2 floor tall Calder inspired kinetic mobile using abstracted letters and characters and the subtle movements of air through the empty space bring the piece to life.
